Where to Stay in Monteverde: US$25 to US$437 a Night, and One US$578 Outlier

Verified on 26 August 2026, on a Booking.com area search and two properties’ own reservation systems, priced for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults (one property for 3–5 December 2026, flagged below).

Monteverde’s inventory for those two nights ran from US$49 to US$874 for two nights — about US$25 to US$437 a night, a factor of roughly 18. That is the widest floor-to-ceiling spread of the four areas we priced the same day on the same basis: Manuel Antonio ran a factor of about 13 (US$110–1,400), La Fortuna about 7.9 (US$73–575) and Tamarindo about 7.4 (US$131–975).

⚠ That US$437 ceiling is the aggregator’s, and one hotel’s own engine sits above it. Hotel Poco a Poco quoted US$390–578 a night on its own reservation system for the same two nights, and its entry room alone is close to the top of the Booking.com band. Poco a Poco did not appear among the 25 cards captured, and what its rate bundles was not established, so we do not use it to set this area’s upper bound — but the number is on this page, in the table below, and the title’s ceiling is the aggregator band’s, not the town’s.

Distance from Santa Elena predicts neither end of that range. The two cheapest listings sit 1.9 km and 2.2 km out; the two dearest sit 1 km and 5.1 km out; and the closest-in property in the set, at 200 m, lands mid-band at about US$90 a night. In Monteverde the band you choose matters more to the budget than the neighbourhood does — and the town and the outlying road each hold both ends of it.

The area band

Reading the distance column

Taking every row rather than the endpoints:

• The two cheapest listings, Pensión Santa Elena and Hostel Cattleya at about US$25 a night, are 1.9 km and 2.2 km from centre.
• The most expensive, Hotel Belmar at about US$437, is 1 km out. The second most expensive, Amalu Luxury View Cabins at about US$354, is 5.1 km out — the furthest listing in the whole set.
• The closest-in listing, Elida Lodge at 200 m, is about US$90 — mid-band. The second closest, Casa Coyota at 350 m, is about US$172.

Proximity to Santa Elena does not sort this market in either direction.

Rates from the properties’ own reservation systems

Hotel Poco a Poco, 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults. Every rate 10% off rack:

Different date window — do not blend with the November figures. Monteverde Country Lodge had no bookable rate for 10–12 November, so it was priced for 3–5 December 2026, 2 adults: Superior Room, 2 Queen Beds, US$127.00 per night, 30% off a US$181 rate, free cancellation until 26 November 2026. Four other categories — two Classic and two Superior — showed no availability for those dates.

A conflict at the top of the range

Hotel Poco a Poco’s entry room, at US$390 a night, is above almost the entire Booking.com band, whose top listing was Hotel Belmar at about US$437.

• Booking.com’s most expensive Monteverde lead-in: Hotel Belmar, US$874 for two nights (~US$437/night).
• Poco a Poco’s own engine: US$390–578 average per night across five categories, for the same nights.

Poco a Poco did not appear among the 25 Booking.com cards captured, and what its rate bundles — meal plans, packages — was not established. Only the Garden Family category was explicitly labelled “Breakfast Included”. We record both figures, do not average them, and do not use Poco a Poco to set the area’s upper bound. Treat it as what one property’s own engine quoted for those dates, not as evidence about Monteverde generally.

What you are paying to be near

The tours are priced separately from the room, and the two Monteverde operators we checked set different terms for the same activity — including the 4 and 6 year minimums our Costa Rica with kids page sets against every other operator’s own.

Selvatura’s canopy tour also carries a maximum weight of 125 kg. 100% Aventura’s pages state “Bus: Not included” for both tours — which is the practical argument against the outlying road: a property several kilometres from Santa Elena adds a transfer to each of those.

Getting there

San José airport → Monteverde: US$54 per person on Tropical Tours Shuttles’ shared service, departing 08:15 and 15:00, a 4-hour ride; US$220 for a private minibus — the most expensive of the four routes in this batch that the same operator prices privately, against US$200 to Manuel Antonio, US$180 to La Fortuna and US$100 from Liberia to Tamarindo. What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the properties’ own published information, not ours.

• Own-site rates for Hotel Belmar, Fonda Vela, Hotel Ficus, Hotel Heliconia and Monteverde Lodge by Boena. All run JavaScript booking engines — SynXis, TravelClick, SimpleBooking — that returned no prices in the page HTML. For Belmar, Fondavela and Monteverde Lodge by Boena the aggregator’s lead-in above is all this page has; Hotel Ficus and Hotel Heliconia are absent from the Booking.com set as well, so this page carries no rate for them at all.
• Whether Hotel Poco a Poco’s quoted rate includes meals beyond breakfast. Its engine labelled only some categories “Breakfast Included”, which is why its figures cannot be compared like for like with the band above.
• Any November 2026 rate for Monteverde Country Lodge. The property showed no availability for 10–12 November, so a 3–5 December window was used and is stated wherever its figure appears.
• Reserve entrance fees for Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Santa Elena Reserve and Curi-Cancha. This page carries no reserve entry price; all four reserves’ rates, and what each does and does not publish about its hours and trails, are on our Monteverde’s four reserves compared page.
• A seasonal comparison. Only the November window was priced, so nothing here says anything about dry or green season rates.
• Whether any of these rates include the 13% sales tax. The engines we read omitted a tax treatment for Monteverde.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we loaded a Booking.com area search for Monteverde in a browser, for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults, and recorded all 25 cards with their lead-in two-night totals and Booking.com’s own distance-from-centre figures. We then queried Hotel Poco a Poco’s and Monteverde Country Lodge’s own reservation systems — the Orbe engine linked from each hotel’s own Book button — for the same nights; Monteverde Country Lodge returned no availability and was priced for 3–5 December 2026 instead, which is stated wherever its figure appears and is never blended with the November set. Tour prices, minimum ages and inclusions come from Selvatura Park’s and 100% Aventura’s own tour pages. The cross-area spread comparison uses four Booking.com area searches — Monteverde, La Fortuna de San Carlos, Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo — pulled the same day for the same nights and the same occupancy; the factors are our arithmetic on those four sourced lists.
