Where to Stay in La Fortuna: Rates from Four Hotels' Own Booking Engines

Priced for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults. The four properties’ own reservation systems were first read on 26 August 2026 and re-read on 24 September 2026; the own-engine figures below are that day’s quotes. The Booking.com town band was read on 26 August 2026 and could not be re-read on 24 September — Booking.com served an automated-traffic challenge.

Updated 24 September 2026 — the ranking reversed. Of the four hotels whose own booking engines we could read, the cheapest nightly rate is now the in-town one: Hotel Magic Mountain’s Superior room at US$149 a night non-refundable, breakfast included and before tax, against US$167 at Arenal Observatory Lodge inside its own reserve and US$266 at Volcano Lodge on the volcano road for its public rate with breakfast and taxes (US$253 for signed-up members). When first read on 26 August, Volcano Lodge was the cheapest at US$148 and Magic Mountain showed only a US$219 Junior Suite. Across the whole town’s Booking.com inventory for the same two nights, as read on 26 August, lead-in prices ran from about US$37 to about US$288 a night.

⚠ Read either ranking with its sample size. Of the four own-engine properties, three are outside town — Volcano Lodge, Arenal Observatory Lodge and Lomas del Volcán — and exactly one, Hotel Magic Mountain, is in it. With an in-town sample of n = 1, neither the August ordering nor the September one is evidence about town versus outlying stays in La Fortuna. It is four data points, three of them from one side, and a month of inventory movement reversed them. This page establishes no town-versus-outlying price difference, and we are not claiming one.

What separates those four numbers is not distance from town — it is what the rate includes, and when you ask. Two of them are quoted with breakfast and before tax; Arenal Observatory Lodge’s plan text says it folds in breakfast, a guided walk, reserve access and all applicable taxes, while the same engine’s footer says room rates exclude the 13% sales tax; Volcano Lodge’s public rate says it includes taxes and breakfast, while its engine footer says the opposite. Rates from the properties’ own reservation systems

All priced for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults, read 24 September 2026. Every engine above prints a footer stating that room rates do not include the 13% sales tax — including the two whose plan text says taxes are included (see below). Only three categories were bookable at Arenal Observatory Lodge and one at Lomas del Volcán for those dates. What these engines quoted on 26 August 2026, for the same nights. Volcano Lodge US$148 with no stated inclusion, US$155 with breakfast and US$421 as a gift-card package; Arenal Observatory Lodge US$167 and US$386; Magic Mountain a Junior Suite at US$219 non-refundable or US$232 refundable. Lomas del Volcán then had no November availability and was priced for 3–5 December at US$258–310 across three bungalow categories. On 24 September its December window showed only the Deluxe bungalow, at US$369 non-refundable or US$410 refundable.

Volcano Lodge’s US$253 and US$531 are the same room on the same night

Volcano Lodge’s own engine returned US$253 (members), US$266 (public seasonal rate) and US$531 (rack, with a gift card) for the same Superior rooms on the same nights. That is a rate-plan difference, not a room difference.

The town-wide band

Booking.com is an aggregator, not the property. Where a property’s own engine could be read, we used the property’s figure.

What is and is not in these prices

Corrected 24 September 2026. Every own engine on this page now prints the same footer: room rates do not include the 13% sales tax. For Magic Mountain and Lomas del Volcán that is the only tax statement, so read their figures as before tax. Arenal Observatory Lodge’s plan text says its rate includes “all applicable taxes”, and Volcano Lodge’s public “Seasonal Price” says it “includes all taxes” — each contradicting its own engine’s footer. We have not adjusted any figure; ask those two properties which statement applies before you compare them. Tabacón’s engine stated the same 13% exclusion when we read it on 26 August 2026; the day-pass pages we re-read on 24 September do not repeat it. An earlier version of this page said three engines stated no tax treatment; on 24 September all of them did.

The hot-springs resorts publish no nightly rate

The three headline hot-springs properties — Tabacón, The Springs Resort and Hotel Arenal Kioro — do not put a readable price on their own sites. Tabacón’s and Kioro’s room engines are TravelClick applications and The Springs runs a SiteMinder button; all three are JavaScript applications that return no rates in the page HTML. Tabacón’s day passes sit in a separate Orbe engine, which does return prices — below. So this page carries no hot-springs resort nightly rate.

What is priced is the alternative. Arenal Observatory Lodge sells day access to people staying elsewhere: a Day Pass at US$40 per person including lunch at its El Jilguero restaurant — a main dish, dessert and natural juice — or an Entrance Pass at US$22 per person. Its reserve is 350 hectares with 11 km of trails at the foot of Arenal volcano. That is the outlying-lodge experience for US$22–40 without changing hotel.

Tabacón’s day pass is the exception, and it is priced — just not on the page that describes it. tabacon.com/day-pass/ sets out the conditions and no figure: guests under 6 have complimentary access, children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times, availability is limited with advance reservation recommended, and maximum group size is 15. The booking engine that same page links to does carry the price: USD 115.00 for the springs-only Day Pass (ages 12 and over) and USD 184.00 with lunch or dinner at Ave Restaurant, tax included, read from the resort’s own engine on 26 August 2026, unchanged on 24 September 2026, and set out in full on our La Fortuna and Arenal page. The gap at this property is the nightly room rate, not the day pass — the engine’s room grid never rendered.

If you are travelling with children

When we read Tabacón’s booking engine on 26 August 2026 it stated that children over 5 were considered adults, with a single 0–5 child selector. Updated 24 September 2026: the day-pass pages of the same engine now carry separate selectors for children aged 6–11 and infants aged 0–5, and no longer print that definition, so do not assume an eight-year-old pays the adult rate there — check the selector when you book. Child cut-offs are set property by property: Magic Mountain’s and Volcano Lodge’s engines say children older than 11 pay the adult price, Lomas del Volcán’s says older than 9, and Arenal Observatory Lodge’s says 8 and older (all read 24 September 2026). Getting there

Tropical Tours Shuttles, from its own route pages, read 26 August 2026:

The same operator prices the same pair differently by direction. On duration it also contradicts itself: its San José–La Fortuna page states “4 hours”, while its own timetable runs 08:15 → 12:30 (4h15) and 15:00 → 19:30 (4h30). Its return page states 4 hours. We print both and are not choosing between them. Those fares are published to La Fortuna, not to individual outlying properties. The route pages promise door-to-door service to “your hotel, hostel or rental house in La Fortuna Arenal volcano” and do not say whether a lodge outside town is served at the same fare (read 24 September 2026) — and three of the properties above are outside the town.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the properties’ own published information, not ours.

• Own-site nightly rates for Tabacón, The Springs Resort and Hotel Arenal Kioro — the three headline hot-springs resorts. All three run JavaScript booking engines returning no rates in HTML.
• Any per-property rate for Arenal Springs Resort, Hotel Montaña de Fuego, Arenal Manoa or Arenal Paraíso. Their sites either did not resolve or exposed no readable engine.
• No gap on the day pass — its price is published, in Tabacón’s own booking engine, at USD 115.00 springs-only and USD 184.00 with a meal. What is missing at Tabacón is the room rate above, not the pass.
• Which tax statement applies at Arenal Observatory Lodge and Volcano Lodge. Each engine’s plan text says taxes are included and its footer says the 13% sales tax is not.
• Any seasonal figure. Only a November window was priced, plus a December window at one property. Dry-season (January–April) and green-season (September–October) rates were not pulled, so no seasonal difference is claimed anywhere on this page.
• Occupancy or average-daily-rate statistics for La Fortuna from ICT or a hotel association.
• Whether shuttle fares to La Fortuna cover outlying lodges.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we queried four La Fortuna properties’ own reservation systems — the Orbe engine linked from each hotel’s own Book button — by requesting the availability URL for stated dates and reading the rates the engine returned, and on 24 September 2026 we requested the same URLs again. All four are now priced for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults; in August Lomas del Volcán had no availability for those nights and was priced for 3–5 December 2026 instead, which is stated wherever those figures appear. The tax and child-age statements come from Tabacón’s and Arenal Observatory Lodge’s own engines, quoted as each states them. The Arenal Observatory Lodge day-pass and entrance-pass prices and the reserve’s size come from that lodge’s official site; Tabacón’s day-pass rates come from the booking engine linked from tabacon.com/day-pass/, and its day-pass conditions from that page. The town-wide band comes from a Booking.com area search loaded in a browser on 26 August, whose card prices are lead-in two-night room totals before taxes and charges — an aggregator, marked as one. It could not be re-read on 24 September: Booking.com answered with an automated-traffic challenge. Shuttle fares, times and durations come from Tropical Tours Shuttles’ own route pages.

Every per-night figure derived from a two-night total is our division by two and is shown with a “~”. Where a property’s own engine could be read, its figure takes precedence over the aggregator’s.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — comparisons, percentages, multiples, differences, per-night and per-person conversions, running totals and currency conversions. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it. Where an operator or authority publishes a per-person or per-night rate directly, that is their figure and it is attributed to them at the point it appears.

These are live inventory prices for two specific nights and they will move — between our two reads a month apart, three of the four hotels’ figures changed. The date stamps are load-bearing.
