Where to Stay in La Fortuna: Rates from Four Hotels' Own Booking Engines

Verified on 26 August 2026, on four La Fortuna properties’ own reservation systems, priced for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults (one property for 3–5 December 2026, flagged below).

Of the four hotels whose own booking engines we could read, the two cheapest nightly rates were both outside La Fortuna town: Volcano Lodge on the volcano road at US$148 a night, and Arenal Observatory Lodge inside its own reserve at US$167, against US$219 for the in-town hillside hotel we priced. Across the whole town’s Booking.com inventory for the same two nights, lead-in prices ran from about US$37 to about US$288 a night.

⚠ Read that first sentence with its sample size. Of the four own-engine properties, three are outside town — Volcano Lodge, Arenal Observatory Lodge and Lomas del Volcán — and exactly one, Hotel Magic Mountain, is in it. With an in-town sample of n = 1, “the two cheapest were outside town” is close to arithmetically unavoidable and is not evidence that outlying stays are cheaper in La Fortuna. It is four data points, three of them from one side. This page establishes no town-versus-outlying price difference, and we are not claiming one.

What separates those four numbers is not distance from town — it is what the rate includes. One of them is quoted tax-inclusive with breakfast, a guided walk and reserve access folded in; the others are quoted as a room, or as something the engine did not describe. Rates from the properties’ own reservation systems

All priced for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults, read 26 August 2026. Only two categories were bookable at Arenal Observatory Lodge for those dates. Reaching the outlying properties is its own cost, priced on our rental car versus shuttle page.

One inference marked as one. Volcano Lodge’s engine listed its US$148 plan with no stated inclusion, alongside a US$155 plan it labelled “buffet breakfast” and a US$421 plan it labelled as including a gift card. Calling the US$148 plan “room only” would be our reading of that silence, not the engine’s wording — so the column above says what the engine said, which is nothing. The US$7 gap to the breakfast plan is consistent with room-only but does not establish it, and it does not tell you whether the 13% sales tax is inside either figure.

Different date window — do not blend these with the table above. Lomas del Volcán had no availability for 10–12 November, so it was priced for 3–5 December 2026, 2 adults:

The US$148 and the US$421 are the same hotel on the same night

Volcano Lodge’s own engine returned US$148 for a Superior Room and US$421 for a package rate including a gift card, for the same nights. That is a rate-plan difference, not a room difference.

The town-wide band

Booking.com area search for La Fortuna de San Carlos, 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults, loaded in a browser on 26 August 2026. Card prices are the lead-in room total for two nights, before taxes and charges, which each card showed separately.

Booking.com is an aggregator, not the property. Where a property’s own engine could be read, we used the property’s figure.

What is and is not in these prices

Tabacón’s own booking engine states: “Room rates do not include 13% Sales Tax.” Arenal Observatory Lodge states the opposite for itself — its rates include all applicable taxes.

For Magic Mountain, Volcano Lodge and Lomas del Volcán, the engines did not state a tax treatment either way. We have not adjusted their figures and we cannot tell you whether the 13% is already in them. That is three of the five properties whose own engines we queried.

The hot-springs resorts publish no nightly rate

The three headline hot-springs properties — Tabacón, The Springs Resort and Hotel Arenal Kioro — do not put a readable price on their own sites. Tabacón’s and Kioro’s room engines are TravelClick applications and The Springs runs a SiteMinder button; all three are JavaScript applications that return no rates in the page HTML. Tabacón’s day passes sit in a separate Orbe engine, which does return prices — below. So this page carries no hot-springs resort nightly rate.

What is priced is the alternative. Arenal Observatory Lodge sells day access to people staying elsewhere: a Day Pass at US$40 per person including lunch at its El Jilguero restaurant — a main dish, dessert and natural juice — or an Entrance Pass at US$22 per person. Its reserve is 350 hectares with 11 km of trails at the foot of Arenal volcano. That is the outlying-lodge experience for US$22–40 without changing hotel.

Tabacón’s day pass is the exception, and it is priced — just not on the page that describes it. tabacon.com/day-pass/ sets out the conditions and no figure: guests under 6 have complimentary access, children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times, availability is limited with advance reservation recommended, and maximum group size is 15. The booking engine that same page links to does carry the price: USD 115.00 for the springs-only Day Pass (ages 12 and over) and USD 184.00 with lunch or dinner at Ave Restaurant, tax included, read from the resort’s own engine on 26 August 2026 and set out in full on our La Fortuna and Arenal page. The gap at this property is the nightly room rate, not the day pass — the engine’s room grid never rendered.

If you are travelling with children

Tabacón’s booking engine states that “children over 5 years old are considered as adults”, and its child selector is labelled “0 - 5 years old”. A family of four with an eight-year-old is priced as three adults at that property. This is a property-level definition, not a La Fortuna-wide one, and it is published on the booking engine rather than on the rate card. Getting there

Tropical Tours Shuttles, from its own route pages, read 26 August 2026:

The same operator prices the same pair differently by direction. On duration it also contradicts itself: its San José–La Fortuna page states “4 hours”, while its own timetable runs 08:15 → 12:30 (4h15) and 15:00 → 19:30 (4h30). Its return page states 4 hours. Those fares are published to La Fortuna, not to individual outlying properties. Whether an outlying lodge is served at the same fare is not published, and three of the properties above are outside the town.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the properties’ own published information, not ours.

• Own-site nightly rates for Tabacón, The Springs Resort and Hotel Arenal Kioro — the three headline hot-springs resorts. All three run JavaScript booking engines returning no rates in HTML.
• Any per-property rate for Arenal Springs Resort, Hotel Montaña de Fuego, Arenal Manoa or Arenal Paraíso. Their sites either did not resolve or exposed no readable engine.
• No gap on the day pass — its price is published, in Tabacón’s own booking engine, at USD 115.00 springs-only and USD 184.00 with a meal. What is missing at Tabacón is the room rate above, not the pass.
• Whether Magic Mountain, Volcano Lodge and Lomas del Volcán quote before or after the 13% sales tax.
• Any seasonal figure. Only a November window was priced, plus a December window at one property. Dry-season (January–April) and green-season (September–October) rates were not pulled, so no seasonal difference is claimed anywhere on this page.
• Occupancy or average-daily-rate statistics for La Fortuna from ICT or a hotel association.
• Whether shuttle fares to La Fortuna cover outlying lodges.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we queried four La Fortuna properties’ own reservation systems — the Orbe engine linked from each hotel’s own Book button — by requesting the availability URL for stated dates and reading the rates the engine returned. Three were priced for 10–12 November 2026, 2 adults; Lomas del Volcán showed no availability for those nights and was priced for 3–5 December 2026, which is stated wherever its figures appear and is never blended with the November set. The tax and child-age statements come from Tabacón’s and Arenal Observatory Lodge’s own engines, quoted as each states them. The Arenal Observatory Lodge day-pass and entrance-pass prices and the reserve’s size come from that lodge’s official site; Tabacón’s day-pass rates come from the booking engine linked from tabacon.com/day-pass/, and its day-pass conditions from that page. The town-wide band comes from a Booking.com area search loaded in a browser the same day, whose card prices are lead-in two-night room totals before taxes and charges — an aggregator, marked as one. Shuttle fares, times and durations come from Tropical Tours Shuttles’ own route pages.

Every per-night figure derived from a two-night total is our division by two and is shown with a “~”. Where a property’s own engine could be read, its figure takes precedence over the aggregator’s.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — comparisons, percentages, multiples, differences, per-night and per-person conversions, running totals and currency conversions. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it. Where an operator or authority publishes a per-person or per-night rate directly, that is their figure and it is attributed to them at the point it appears.
