SJO or LIR? Which Costa Rica Airport to Fly Into, by Destination

On this page 5 sections

Verified on 25 September 2026, on both airports’ own destination pages, SJO’s statistics page, Guanacaste Airport’s About and transport pages, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute’s arrivals report to August 2026, and the route pages of two shuttle operators that serve both airports.

Pick the airport by where you are going first. On the shuttle operators’ own stated times, Tamarindo is about 1.5 hours from Liberia (LIR) against 5 to 5.5 hours from San José (SJO); Manuel Antonio is 3.5 to 4.5 hours from SJO, depending on the operator, against about 6 hours from LIR; the Caribbean coast is 4.5 to 5 hours from SJO against about 9 from LIR. La Fortuna and Monteverde sit in between: 3 to 4 hours to La Fortuna and about 4 to Monteverde from SJO, 3.5 to 4.5 hours from LIR. Where you fly from matters too: SJO lists five European cities that LIR does not, and LIR lists four Canadian cities that SJO does not.

The arrivals data shows two airports drawing different markets: SJO is the larger network, with 3.2 times LIR’s 2025 passengers by our arithmetic, but LIR took 68.8% of the Canadian tourists who landed at either airport in January–August 2026, per ICT’s figures, and grew faster than SJO over those months.

Shared shuttle, per person, one way, read on each operator’s own route page on 25 September 2026. Where a fare is on another of our pages, this table links to it rather than repeating it. Stated times are the operator’s own, and they differ between operators on the same road by up to an hour — LIR to La Fortuna is 3 1/2 hours for Tropical Tours and about 4.5 hours for Easy Ride. From SJO, the table’s times are Easy Ride’s only; across all the operators on those two route pages, stated times run 3 to 4 hours to La Fortuna and 3.5 to 4.5 hours to Manuel Antonio.

Two details change what those rows mean at the terminal.

  • At LIR, the shared shuttles do not leave from the terminal door. Tropical Tours’ shared service to La Fortuna, Monteverde and San José meets passengers at the Hilton Garden Inn Liberia, departing 09:20 and 15:00; its private service waits outside the terminal by the mini market. Easy Ride picks up at Café Britt at LIR.
  • At SJO, Easy Ride’s pickup depends on the destination: Restaurant Denny’s near SJO for La Fortuna, Tamarindo and the Caribbean; Restaurant Malinche, next to the airport’s main exit door, for Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. Tropical Tours’ Tamarindo service departs from the airport itself, at 08:15 and 15:00.

One timetable does not match its own summary. Tropical Tours states 3 1/2 hours from LIR to La Fortuna, but times its morning run 09:20 to 12:15 — 2 hours 55 minutes by our arithmetic. Its Monteverde page publishes the identical departure and arrival times, and heads its private-transfer section “Liberia Airport to Samara”. We quote both pages as published and would not plan a connection to the minute on either.

If you land at one airport and need the other side of the country, Sansa flies San José–Liberia in approximately 50 minutes, and its own destination page says it could operate up to eight daily flights on the route, depending on the season. Its fare is on our Costa Rica trip cost page.

Which airport flies to your city

Each airport publishes its own list of international destinations. Neither list gives seasons or frequencies, so a listing does not tell you when, or how often, a city is served.

The one-list-only rows and the counts are our comparison of the two airports’ own pages, read 25 September 2026. LIR’s page lists 23 destinations — 16 in the United States, 6 in Canada and 1 in Europe; its About page separately says it operated 26 direct international routes with 12 airlines in 2025. More on the Liberia terminal itself is on our Tamarindo and Guanacaste page.

Who actually lands where: 2026 arrivals

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) counts international tourist arrivals by airport from migration records. January to August 2026:

Arrivals by originSJOLIRLIR’s share of the two (our arithmetic)
All international tourists1,279,455744,91536.8%
United States641,615567,21646.9%
Canada69,177152,82268.8%
Europe304,91914,5804.6%

Against the same eight months of 2025, ICT’s own variation columns show LIR up 11.9% and SJO up 2.6%; US arrivals up 8.4% at LIR and down 1.9% at SJO; Canadian arrivals up 30.9% at LIR and 13.3% at SJO; European arrivals up 10.2% at SJO and down 13.5% at LIR. For the full year 2025, ICT counts 1,783,761 tourist arrivals at SJO and 904,762 at LIR.

These are tourists — non-resident overnight visitors — not all passengers. On total passengers in and out, SJO’s own statistics page reports 6,403,220 in 2025 (up 3.2%) and 3,934,212 for January–July 2026 (up 1.5%) — its table had no August figure when we read it; Guanacaste Airport reports 1,973,831 in 2025, which it calls a record year.

At the airport

SJO’s own transport page lists parking for about 400 vehicles on two levels, open 24 hours, at USD 2.76 an hour from noon to 15:59, USD 2.63 an hour at other times, USD 35 a day or USD 200 a week, and states that orange taxis are the only ones authorised to serve SJO. Guanacaste Airport’s transport page tells arrivals to use only authorised transportation, identified by official credentials and company uniforms, and lists three contact numbers; it publishes no fares. The ARESEP taxi tariff and what it does and does not cover are on our Liberia airport to Tamarindo page.

What the airports and operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the published information, not in our search:

  • Seasons and frequencies. Neither airport’s destination list says when or how often each city is served; the only dated entry is SJO’s Tampa, listed as “OCTUBRE 2026”.
  • LIR’s airline names in page text. Its airlines page renders logos and phone numbers only.
  • Fares or operator names on LIR’s transport page. It shows the authorised operators as logos with phone numbers only, and its location page carries no text beyond navigation.
  • Official road distances from either airport. Every time on this page is an operator’s estimate.
  • Airfares into each airport. They depend on your origin and date, and we did not quote them.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not a trip taken. On 25 September 2026 we read SJO’s destination (Conectividad), airlines, transport and statistics pages, and Guanacaste Airport’s destination, About and transport pages. Arrival figures come from ICT’s arrivals report with data to August 2026, read in the PDF itself; we checked that each airport’s monthly figures sum to the totals ICT prints. Shuttle fares, times and pickup points come from Tropical Tours Shuttles’ four route pages and Easy Ride’s SJO and Liberia airport pages; the flight time and frequency from Sansa’s Liberia page.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic or our comparison are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — the shares, the passenger multiple, elapsed times and the one-list-only rows. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it.

Last verified: 25 September 2026. Route lists change by season and shuttle fares without notice.
