San José to Tamarindo (and Back): Shuttle Times, Fares and the Official Bus Price

On this page 9 sections

Verified on 25 September 2026, on the route pages of three shuttle operators, on Sansa’s own Tamarindo page, and on ARESEP’s official national bus-fare register.

A shared shuttle between San José and Tamarindo costs USD 54 to USD 69 per person one way, depending on the operator and the direction. The regulated public bus costs CRC 8,040 in either direction — about USD 17.70 at the Banco Central’s reference sell rate of 454.15 colones on 25 September 2026 (our conversion). The operators state 4½ to 5½ hours by road; Sansa states about 50 minutes by air.

The fares are not symmetrical. Tropical Tours Shuttles charges USD 65 from San José airport to Tamarindo but USD 56 back to the airport, and USD 54 back to the city. Easy Ride charges USD 69 both ways.

All shuttle figures were read on each operator’s own page on 25 September 2026, priced per person. Tropical Tours collects from your location in Tamarindo; Easy Ride from the main Tamarindo and Langosta hotels. Neither shuttle company’s page says whether its fare includes Costa Rica’s 13% IVA.

Interbus does sell this pair on its booking engine even though its route table shows no fare; that quote, for a 15 October 2026 travel date, sits with nine other Interbus shared-shuttle quotes on our Costa Rica trip cost page rather than being repeated here.

Tropical Tours’ timetables say something different from its summaries

Each Tropical Tours route page gives a one-line duration and a departure-and-arrival timetable. On three pages, the two do not match:

Route pageStatedDeparture → arrivalElapsed, per its own times
SJO → Tamarindo5½ hours08:15 → 13:305 h 15 min
15:00 → 20:305 h 30 min

14:00 → 18:004 h 00 min
Tamarindo → San José city4½ hours08:00 → 12:304 h 30 min
14:00 → 18:004 h 00 min

The elapsed column is our arithmetic on the operator’s published times. The oddest line is the afternoon return: the 14:00 from Tamarindo is timetabled into the airport and the city at the same 18:00, on two separate pages, although the city-bound morning run takes half an hour longer than the airport-bound one. Where a page’s headline duration and its timetable disagree, the longer of the two is the one to plan against. The operator adds that its minibuses first go through town collecting passengers, and warns of “bumpy and dusty roads” on some sections.

The westbound afternoon departure matters for anyone flying in: Tropical Tours’ 15:00 from SJO is timetabled into Tamarindo at 20:30, and Easy Ride’s 14:00 from Denny’s publishes no arrival time at all.

Surfboards and small print

The operators price boards differently, and one operator prices them differently by direction:

Operator, directionSurfboard
Tropical Tours, SJO → TamarindoUSD 15, boards up to 6 ft only
Tropical Tours, Tamarindo → San José or SJOno extra charge
Easy Ride, any route on its pagesUSD 20 per board

Easy Ride also states it does not accept pets on shared shuttles. All three Tropical Tours pages say the service may be run by third-party companies.

Private transfer: the crossover depends on the direction

Tropical Tours publishes a private minibus at USD 297 one way in both directions, carrying up to 10, with USD 20 extra per person above six passengers leaving SJO — but above four passengers coming back from Tamarindo. There is also a USD 20 surcharge for pickups between 21:00 and 06:00, and 24 hours’ notice is required.

Every cell is our arithmetic on four Tropical Tours figures per direction: the shared fare, USD 297, the USD 20 per-head surcharge and the passenger count at which it starts. Going to Tamarindo, private wins from five passengers. Coming back, it wins only from seven — the cheaper return seat and the earlier surcharge threshold together push the crossover two passengers higher. At six passengers on the airport run the two options are a dollar apart. Easy Ride’s USD 69 seat is not in the table because the three Easy Ride shuttle pages we read give no private fare for this pair.

The public bus, at the regulated fare

ARESEP, the regulator, publishes the national intercity fare register as open data. Pulled on 25 September 2026:

RegularSenior (adulto mayor)
San José – Tamarindo, route 1502CRC 8,040CRC 6,030

The concession is held by Transporte Inteligente de Guanacaste S.A.; the fare was set by resolution RE-0115-IT-2026 and has been in force since 4 September 2026. The register carries two San José–Tamarindo branches at the same fare — one via the Puente La Amistad (ARESEP’s average route distance 278.24 km) and one via the Interamericana (302.13 km) — and both are registered “y viceversa”, so the fare is the same in each direction. Those kilometres are ARESEP’s route figures for the bus, not a road authority’s driving distance.

Departure times come from an aggregator, not the operator. ARESEP regulates fares, not timetables. The BuscoBus schedule site, read on 25 September 2026, lists:

DirectionDeparturesArrivalsListed duration
San José → Tamarindo08:30, 15:3014:00, 21:005 h 30 min
Tamarindo → San José11:30, 16:0016:30, 21:005 h 0 min

It shows the same times Monday to Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The same aggregator carries a fare nearly a thousand colones below the regulated one, which we do not reproduce: the ARESEP register is the regulator’s own record of the concession, and it has been in force since 4 September. The aggregator names no San José terminal on the pages we read.

Flying instead

Sansa’s own Tamarindo page states a direct San José–Tamarindo flight time of approximately 50 minutes. Its frequency sentence contradicts itself: the raw page reads “SANSA Airlines could operate up to eight daily flights operate up to four daily flights between San José and Tamarindo”, depending on season. We print both numbers because the page does. Sansa’s fare for this route, with its tax breakdown, is priced on our Costa Rica trip cost page.

If you are flying into Liberia instead

Liberia’s Guanacaste Airport is the other airport travellers use for Tamarindo. That leg has its own operators, fares and a regulated taxi tariff, all set out on our Liberia airport to Tamarindo page.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the operators’ and authorities’ own published information:

  • Interbus fares on its public route table, and any Interbus departure from San José to Tamarindo on that table. The reverse row carries times but no fare.
  • Arrival times from Easy Ride or Interbus. Both publish departures and a duration only.
  • Whether any quoted shuttle fare includes 13% IVA. None of the three shuttle companies’ route pages we read says.
  • An operator-published bus timetable. The times above are the aggregator’s; ARESEP publishes fares only.
  • The San José terminal for route 1502, on the pages we read.
  • Tamarindo Transfers & Tours’ San José airport price. The operator’s own transfer cards on its Liberia-airport page carry the San José airport–Tamarindo pair, both directions, as a Private Transfer at a price of 220 and a duration of 4-5 hours — the same card data that carries its USD 85 Liberia–Tamarindo private fare, which our Tamarindo and Guanacaste page quotes alongside this one. The price sits in the page’s card data rather than in its visible text, and the card states no currency, so we leave it out of the comparison above. Read 25 September 2026.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the timetables, route pages and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 25 September 2026 we read Tropical Tours Shuttles’ three route pages for this pair (SJO → Tamarindo, Tamarindo → SJO, Tamarindo → San José), Easy Ride’s San José, SJO-airport and Tamarindo shuttle pages, Interbus’s route table and Sansa’s Tamarindo page, taking every fare, time and duration from the operator’s own page. The bus fare comes from a direct pull of ARESEP’s open-data register; the bus times from the BuscoBus aggregator, which we name wherever we use it. The elapsed times and the private-versus-shared table are our arithmetic on the operators’ published figures; the dollar conversion uses BCCR indicator 318, the reference sell rate, at 454.15 on 25 September 2026.

Last verified: 25 September 2026. Shuttle fares and timetables change without notice; the bus fare stands until the next ARESEP resolution.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic or our conversion are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — elapsed times, the passenger-count comparison and currency conversions. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it.
