San José to La Fortuna: Shuttle Times, Fares and the Official Bus Price

Verified on 26 August 2026, on four shuttle operators’ own route pages and on ARESEP’s official national bus-fare register.

Shared shuttles from San José to La Fortuna cost USD 54 to USD 65 per person one way, depending on which company you book. The public bus is CRC 3,930 — an officially regulated fare, in force since 1 July 2026.

Shuttle departures and fares

All read from each operator’s own page on 26 August 2026, priced per person one way.

Two constraints sit in that table.

MyPinkBus does not run on Saturdays. Its route page states the service runs Monday to Friday and Sunday. A Saturday arrival cannot use that operator at all.

Tropical Tours’ afternoon run arrives after dark. Its 15:00 departure is timetabled into La Fortuna at 19:30 — well after the national park’s 4:00 p.m. close, though Baldi and Los Lagos hot springs both stay open to 10 p.m.

The operator contradicts its own timetable

Tropical Tours states the trip takes “4 hours”. Its own published departure and arrival times do not:

Both figures are on the same page. Plan against the timetable, and know that the operator’s own summary line says less than its own clock does. MyPinkBus is the one operator whose stated duration matches its published times exactly: 08:00 to 12:00 is four hours.

Across all four operators, stated durations run from about 3 hours to 4 hours for the same road, and Tropical Tours’ own timetable stretches to 4 h 30. Shared shuttles do hotel-by-hotel pickup and drop-off across the San José metro before leaving, which is where the spread lives.

Separately, a shuttle operator’s own route guide estimates the drive at 2 to 3 hours — at or below the fastest scheduled service on this page across that whole range, and well below that operator’s own four-hour shuttle.

The public bus, at the regulated fare

Costa Rica regulates intercity bus fares. ARESEP, the regulator, publishes the whole national register as open data, and we pulled it directly on 26 August 2026.

Route 214, ramal San José–Ciudad Quesada–La Fortuna, fraccionamiento San José–La Fortuna. Concessionaire A.T.Z. Alfaro Ruiz S.A. (cédula 3-101-554030). Set by resolution RE067IT26/RE050IT26, dated 18 June 2026, published in La Gaceta 113 on 19 June 2026, in force from 1 July 2026. We checked the register for any superseding row on this route and there is none; the dataset is live, carrying rows with effective dates as recent as 26 August 2026.

Changing at Ciudad Quesada costs more, not less

Priced against the same official register:

Splitting the journey costs CRC 450 to CRC 510 more and adds a transfer, whenever a direct departure exists. All four rows come from the same register and all take effect 1 July 2026.

Other published fare figures

Three different fares circulate for this bus, and only one of them is the regulated one.

We publish CRC 3,930, from ARESEP’s own fare register, in force 1 July 2026 — the regulator’s record of the concession rather than a report of it.

The other two both come from the same Costa Rican schedule aggregator, and we reproduce neither. Its route page carries a fare a few hundred colones below the regulated one, close enough to read as a pre-revision number. Its terminal page carries a range two to three times the regulated fare, on a page that flags itself “Verificar operador.” A figure that far above a gazetted tariff is not a competing price, so we do not print it as one.

The operator’s name is also disputed: ARESEP’s concession register names A.T.Z. Alfaro Ruiz S.A. for route 214; the aggregator names Autotransportes San José a Venecia de San Carlos S.A. We prefer the regulator’s concession record and are not resolving it further.

Departure times for the bus are not published by any official source. ARESEP regulates fares, not timetables, and its register carries no schedule. Morning departures around 06:15 and 08:40 recur across the sources we read; a third is given as either 11:30 or 11:50, and one page instead lists an 11:00 pm service. Only that pattern is safe to repeat. Terminal 7-10 in San José is the place to confirm: +506 2519-9743 and +506 2519-9744, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

One trap worth naming: ARESEP registers other “La Fortuna” fares — Bagaces–La Fortuna on route 515, San Isidro–La Fortuna on route 179 — which are entirely different towns of the same name.

Private transfer: where it beats the shared fare

Tropical Tours publishes both a shared fare and a private one for this route, so the comparison can be made within a single operator. Its private minibus is USD 180 one way, with an extra USD 20 per person beyond six passengers, an extra USD 20 for pickups between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and 24 hours’ notice required.

Only three figures in that table are Tropical Tours’: USD 54 shared per person, USD 180 private, and the USD 20 per head above six passengers. Every other cell is our arithmetic on those three — the shared column is USD 54 multiplied out, the USD 200 at seven passengers is USD 180 plus one USD 20 surcharge, and the difference column is one subtracted from the other. The operator publishes no passenger-count table of its own.

The crossover is between three and four passengers, and there is no case in that range where the answer reverses.

A second operator, Transportation in Costa Rica, prices a private shuttle on this route “from $165”. The same page carries a lower site-wide starting price for shared services, but does not attach it to San José–La Fortuna, so it is not a fare for this route and we do not reproduce the figure. Across the two operators that publish one, private transfers run USD 165 to USD 180 one way.

The 16 km the shuttle does not cover

Shuttles drop at La Fortuna hotels. Arenal Volcano National Park is 16 km further on — that figure is the legend on SINAC’s own public-use map for the park. Getting to the park gate is a separate leg from getting to town.

The road

The route numbers are consistent across every source we read: Route 1 (the Pan-American Highway) to Route 141 at San Ramón, then Route 702 into La Fortuna. The distance is not. A shuttle operator’s own route guide gives approximately 135 kilometres (84 miles), and figures in the 130–140 km band appear elsewhere; Costa Rican road authorities publish no distance for this journey that we could find, so nothing on this page states one as official.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the operators’ and authorities’ own published information:

• Interbus’s fare for this route, on the pages a reader lands on. Its route table shows a dash for San José–La Fortuna and states only that “All rates are per person / per way” and “Rates are subject to change without notice”; four interbusonline.com URLs were fetched and no fare found. Its itineraries page carries only a starting price for a multi-destination San José–La Fortuna–Manuel Antonio–San José circuit, explicitly “based on shared shuttle availability and current promotions” — that is not a fare for this leg. Interbus does price this leg on its booking engine, and this page should not be read as saying otherwise: book.interbusonline.com quoted USD 61 shared per adult and USD 241 private per vehicle for travel on 15 October 2026, which is why the table above shows “not published” rather than a figure — a booking-engine quote for one date is not a published fare. • Whether any quoted shuttle fare includes Costa Rica’s 13% IVA. None of the four operator pages says either way.
• Arrival times from Easy Ride or Interbus. Both publish departures and a duration estimate only.
• Official public-bus departure times. Government sources publish none; the terminal phone numbers above are the only way to confirm.
• An official road distance from MOPT or CONAVI.
• Gray Line Costa Rica’s fare. The Gray Line page could not be fetched; only third-party summaries exist, and we are not citing those.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we read the route pages of Tropical Tours Shuttles, MyPinkBus, Easy Ride, Interbus and Transportation in Costa Rica, and took every fare, departure time, arrival time and stated duration from the operator’s own page. The elapsed-time arithmetic in the section above is ours, computed from Tropical Tours’ own published departure and arrival times.

Bus fares come from a direct pull of ARESEP’s open-data fare register — 4,785 rows of the national tariff schedule, the regulator’s own file rather than a schedule site. The split-trip comparison is our arithmetic across four rows of that same register. Terminal details and the disputed departure times come from a Costa Rican schedule aggregator, which we cite for the terminal and phone numbers and not for the fare.

The 16 km to the park gate comes from SINAC’s public-use map for Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal.

Where operators disagree with each other, or with themselves, we print both figures. Where a number exists only on an aggregator page that contradicts the regulator, we say so and publish the regulator’s — and we describe the contradicted figure rather than reprinting it, so that no refuted number can be lifted out of this page as though it were ours.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — comparisons, percentages, multiples, differences, per-night and per-person conversions, running totals and currency conversions. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it. Where an operator or authority publishes a per-person or per-night rate directly, that is their figure and it is attributed to them at the point it appears.
