Nosara, Costa Rica: Getting There, and the Ostional Turtle Refuge

On this page 5 sections

Verified on 25 September 2026, on SINAC’s own page for the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, ARESEP’s official bus-fare register, the route pages of Tropical Tours Shuttles, Easy Ride and Interbus, Sansa’s Nosara page and the Central Bank’s exchange rate for that day.

From Liberia airport, Tropical Tours Shuttles runs a USD 50 shared shuttle to Nosara at 09:00 and 15:00; Easy Ride charges USD 79. From San José, the regulated public bus is CRC 4,340 (about USD 9.56), shared shuttles cost USD 97 (Tropical Tours, from the airport) and USD 129 (Easy Ride), and Sansa flies direct in about 45 minutes. Nosara’s beaches sit inside the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, which charges non-residents USD 13.56 (SINAC does not say whether on Nosara’s own beaches), opens 5:00 am to 9:00 pm every day, and requires a local guide during the turtle arribadas.

The numbers split by side of the country: from Liberia the shared seat is USD 50 and Tropical Tours’ own clock puts it at two to three hours; from San José the two shuttle fares are about 10 and 13.5 times the regulated bus fare (our arithmetic).

Currency: USD figures converted from colones are our arithmetic, at the Banco Central de Costa Rica reference sell rate of CRC 454.15 per US dollar for 25 September 2026.

All read on each operator’s own page on 25 September 2026, per person, one way. Interbus lists no Nosara service at all: every Nosara row on its route table — to or from San José, Liberia, La Fortuna, Monteverde, Tamarindo, Sámara, Santa Teresa and Río Segundo — is a dash.

Two lines on the Tropical Tours pages do not add up, and we reproduce them as printed rather than correct them:

  • Liberia airport to Nosara is stated as “3 hours”, but its own morning timetable runs 09:00 to 11:00 — 2 hours by our arithmetic. The afternoon run, 15:00 to 18:00, matches the stated 3 hours. Easy Ride estimates about 4 hours for the same leg.
  • Tamarindo to Nosara prints an arrival of “10:30pm” for its 09:00am departure, which cannot be reconciled with the same page’s “3 hours”. The afternoon run arrives 18:30.

The San José airport page is internally consistent on time — 08:00 to 13:30 is the stated 5½ hours — but not on price: the route body gives a private minibus at USD 297, while the same page’s sidebar lists “SJO San Jose Airport to Nosara Private from $220”. It also charges USD 15 for surfboards, limited to 6 feet; the other Tropical Tours pages we read carry surfboards “at no extra charge”.

A fourth company’s private Liberia-airport rate to Nosara is listed on our Tamarindo and Guanacaste page.

Private or shared, from Liberia airport

Tropical Tours publishes USD 50 per shared seat, USD 140 private one way, and USD 20 per person above four passengers. On those three figures (our arithmetic): one passenger pays USD 50 shared against USD 140 private; two pay USD 100 against USD 140; three pay USD 150 shared against USD 140 private, the point where private becomes cheaper; four pay USD 200 against USD 140; five, USD 250 against USD 160. Private stays cheaper at every size from three upwards.

The public bus, at the regulated fare

ARESEP, the fare regulator, publishes the national bus tariff register as open data. We pulled it on 25 September 2026; every fare below has been in force since 4 September 2026 under resolution RE-0115-IT-2026.

Fare (ARESEP register)RegularSeniorOperator
San José – Nicoya – Nosara (route 1507)CRC 4,340 (about USD 9.56)CRC 3,260Transporte Inteligente de Guanacaste S.A.
Nicoya – Nosara (route 548)CRC 2,250 (about USD 4.95)CRC 1,690Transportes Rojas Castro S.A.
Sámara – Nosara (route 548)CRC 1,020CRC 510Transportes Rojas Castro S.A.
Santa Cruz – Nosara (route 533)CRC 4,200 (about USD 9.25)CRC 3,150Mardel S.A.

Route 1507 registers the same CRC 4,340 on each of its San José branches — to Nicoya (an average 209.8 km trip in the register), to Hojancha, to Estrada via Sámara, and to Nosara (268.0 km). SINAC’s own directions page puts the San José–Nosara bus at 5 to 6 hours.

ARESEP regulates fares, not timetables, and its register has no departure times. The operator’s website, tiguanacaste.com, is a JavaScript application whose page source carries no timetable text, so we could not read one from it on 25 September 2026.

Flying: Sansa to Nosara

Sansa’s Nosara page states that it flies direct from San José to Nosara with “an approximate flight time of 45 minutes”, and that “we operate daily flights to Nosara”. Its sentence on frequency reads, verbatim, “SANSA Airlines could operate up to eight daily flights operate up to four daily flights between San José and Nosara” — two numbers in one sentence, so we cannot tell you which it means. The fare calendar on that page shows 2018 dates and is not a current price; Sansa’s live San José–Nosara fares, quoted on its booking engine, are on our Costa Rica trip cost page.

The Ostional National Wildlife Refuge

SINAC’s page for the refuge states that it is made up of the Ostional, Nosara, Peladas and Guiones beaches. Playa Ostional lies in Cuajiniquil district, Santa Cruz canton; the other three are in Nosara district, Nicoya canton. The refuge covers 468 hectares of land and 8,000 hectares of sea and was created in 1983 to protect the olive ridley turtle (tortuga lora).

Read on SINAC’s page on 25 September 2026. The fee is SINAC’s; the guide is, in SINAC’s words, a private service contracted separately, and SINAC prints no price for it. It names two guide associations: Asociación de Guías Locales de Ostional (AGLO), 2682-0428 / 6252-7412, and Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Ostional (ADIO), 2682-1229 / 6108-1681. The refuge office is on 2682-0400 / 2682-0937.

SINAC’s page does not say whether the USD 13.56 is charged on Guiones, Pelada or Nosara beach, though it places all three inside the refuge.

What SINAC says about the arribada

  • It happens on about 800 metres of the beach, all year round, once or twice a month, with between 15,000 and 200,000 females arriving. An earlier paragraph on the same page places the simultaneous nesting along 7 km of beach; both figures are SINAC’s.
  • SINAC calls Ostional the world’s main nesting and breeding site for the olive ridley, and the second most important beach for mass nesting after Playa Escobilla in Mexico, citing Spotila (2004).
  • The same page’s headline speaks of “cientos de tortugas” — hundreds of turtles — against the body’s 15,000 to 200,000. Both are SINAC’s.
  • SINAC publishes no arribada dates or forecast on this page.

Not permitted in the refuge, per SINAC: motor vehicles on the beach, including motorbikes and quad bikes; horse tours on the sand; leaving rubbish; bonfires; flash photography at night; domestic animals. SINAC also advises against reflective clothing at night and asks visitors to check with a guide before using a torch, because light can make a turtle abandon its nest.

Getting from Nosara to Ostional

SINAC’s directions page says the road from Sámara runs about 26 km towards Nosara, through Barco Quebrado, Garza, Guiones and Pelada, to Playa Ostional, and that by bus you take a taxi of about 25 minutes from Nosara to Ostional. The alternative is the Santa Cruz–Ostional bus: CRC 3,360 in ARESEP’s register (Mardel S.A., route 533), and “about 3 hours” per SINAC, which adds that this bus cannot run in heavy rain. For the Liberia-side road through Santa Cruz and San Juanillo, SINAC recommends a 4×4.

What the operators and authorities don’t publish

  • Arribada dates, or the price of the mandatory arribada guide — SINAC gives neither.
  • Whether the refuge fee applies at Guiones, Pelada or Nosara beach.
  • A San José–Nosara bus timetable in any form we could read on 25 September 2026: ARESEP carries none, and the operator’s site is JavaScript-only.
  • Which of Sansa’s two daily-frequency figures is current.
  • Arrival times from Easy Ride, which gives departures and an approximate duration only.
  • Any Interbus service to Nosara.
  • An official road distance from San José. ARESEP’s 268 km is the bus route’s average trip length, not a road-authority figure.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. Nobody from this site has made these journeys or visited the refuge.

On 25 September 2026 we read, and saved the text of, SINAC’s Ostional refuge pages (main, directions and contact); Tropical Tours Shuttles’ route pages from Liberia airport, San José airport and Tamarindo to Nosara and its Nosara route list; Easy Ride’s shared-shuttle pages from San José, Liberia airport and Santa Teresa; Interbus’s route table; Sansa’s Nosara page; and the bus operator’s website. Bus fares come from a direct pull of ARESEP’s open-data fare register (4,770 rows that day). Colón-to-dollar conversions use the Banco Central de Costa Rica reference sell rate for 25 September 2026, CRC 454.15, rather than the older rate used elsewhere on this site.

The elapsed times, the party-size comparison, the bus-to-shuttle multiples and the currency conversions are our arithmetic. Where a source contradicts itself — the Sansa frequency sentence, the Tropical Tours arrival time, the two private prices on one page — we print what it says rather than choosing.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — comparisons, multiples, differences, per-person totals and currency conversions. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it.
