Liberia Airport (LIR) to Tamarindo: Fares, Times and the Taxi Rules

Verified on 26 August 2026, on four shuttle operators’ own route pages, on ARESEP’s published taxi tariff, and on Guanacaste Airport’s own transport page. The Tropical Tours figures below were re-read in that page’s raw HTML on 27 August 2026.

Two operators independently publish a shared shuttle at USD 30 per person: Tropical Tours Shuttles, on one scheduled daily departure leaving Liberia airport at 09:15 and reaching Tamarindo at 11:15, and Tamarindo Transfers & Tours, which publishes the fare without a timetable. The cheapest published private transfer is USD 85 one way from Tamarindo Transfers & Tours, against from USD 89 from LIR Shuttle and USD 100 from Tropical Tours Shuttles. A third operator, Easy Ride, publishes the same shared seat at USD 39 across three daily departures. LIR Shuttle puts the drive at approximately 68 km (42.5 mi) and about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Every published price on this route comes from a company selling the ride. The airport authority publishes no tariff and no fixed fare to Tamarindo, and the taxi regulator publishes no Liberia airport base at all — so the only official numbers that exist for this journey are per-kilometre taxi rates that no source totals for you.

The options, and who publishes each figure

All checked 26 August 2026. Note who is talking in each row: the bus, rental-car and drive-time figures are all published by LIR Shuttle, a private transfer company describing the alternatives to its own product — not by the bus operator or by a rental company. LIR Shuttle’s rental range in particular is its own characterisation of the market, and we treat it as indicative only — what a rental car really costs against a shuttle seat is worked out separately.

The USD 30 shared fare is not one company’s number. Tropical Tours Shuttles and Tamarindo Transfers & Tours publish it independently, on their own separate route pages, read the same day — two operators landing on the same figure rather than one figure repeated. The private side does not agree with itself the same way: USD 85, from USD 89 and USD 100 is a USD 15 spread across three operators for the same road, and the operator that is cheapest privately is one of the two cheapest shared. LIR Shuttle also characterises the shared-shuttle market as USD 20 to USD 39 per person depending on company and season, which brackets the USD 30 both operators publish. What the shuttle operators publish about their own services

Tropical Tours Shuttles, on its Liberia–Tamarindo route page:

• Shared shuttle USD 30 per person, one scheduled daily departure, 09:15 from Liberia airport, 11:15 into Tamarindo.
• Its 2-hour trip estimate is longer than the pure drive time because of hotel drop-offs.
• A 20-minute grace window is offered for customs or flight delays if you notify the company in advance.
• Private service USD 100 per trip one way, in a minibus carrying up to 10; above 6 passengers an extra USD 20 per person applies.
• A USD 20 night surcharge for pickups between 21:00 and 06:00.
• Booking required 24 hours ahead.

Easy Ride, on its own Liberia-airport shared-shuttle page:

• Shared shuttle USD 39 per person, three daily departures — 09:30, 12:30 and 15:30 — at about 1.5 hours, the only operator here publishing an afternoon service on this pair.
• Pickup is at Café Britt inside the LIR terminal, with hotel drop-off in Tamarindo and Langosta.

LIR Shuttle, on its Liberia-airport-to-Tamarindo page:

• Private transfer from USD 89 one way, in vans it states are 2020 or newer and air-conditioned.
• The drive is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes over approximately 68 km (42.5 mi) — and rises to 2 hours or more over Holy Week, Christmas and New Year, because Tamarindo has only one access road.
• On the bus: there is a bus station at the airport, buses run roughly hourly, the fare is about USD 4 and the trip about 3 hours, and the bus may not drop you at your hotel — and Tamarindo’s listings run from 100 m to 8.8 km out of centre, on our where to stay in Tamarindo page.

The two journey times are not a contradiction. The 1 hour 30 minutes is point-to-point driving; the 2 hours is a shuttle estimate that includes multiple hotel drop-offs. We record them separately rather than reconciling them into one number.

The private fares are a genuine operator-to-operator spread: USD 85, from USD 89, and USD 100, for services the three companies describe differently. Tamarindo Transfers & Tours publishes the same private board for 18 Guanacaste destinations out of LIR, from USD 75 to USD 280; those are set out on our Tamarindo and Guanacaste page.

Taxis: what the regulator actually publishes

Costa Rica’s public services regulator, ARESEP, sets taxi tariffs. These rates took effect 1 July 2026 under resolution RE-0050-IT-2026, published in La Gaceta No. 93 of 22 May 2026:

Two rules matter more than the rates:

1. ARESEP states the driver may agree a fare equal to or lower than the meter — never higher.
2. ARESEP publishes only two tariff bases: the regular red-fleet base and a special airport base that covers Juan Santamaría (SJO). There is no Liberia-specific base, so taxis at Liberia airport fall under the standard bases.

We are not publishing a metered total for this trip. Multiplying CRC 840 by 68 km is possible, but no source states that total, and ARESEP publishes no LIR airport base against which to check it. A number we invented by multiplication is not a fare.

Guanacaste Airport’s own transport page tells arrivals to use only authorised transport, identifiable by official credentials and company uniforms. It publishes no taxi tariff and no fixed fare to Tamarindo.

What nobody publishes

These are gaps in the official and operator information, not ours:

• An official flat taxi fare from Liberia airport to Tamarindo. Guanacaste Airport publishes no tariff; ARESEP’s special airport base covers Juan Santamaría only. A metered figure is derivable from the CRC 840/km rate over roughly 68 km, but no source states it, so we do not assert it.
• Whether Liberia airport taxis must run the meter for intercity trips, or may quote a negotiated flat fare instead.
• The public bus timetable and the operator’s name. The only source we have says “about every hour”, with no schedule and no company.
• Journey time for the LIR Shuttle or Tropical Tours private transfer, and what LIR Shuttle’s “from USD 89” covers at its floor. Tamarindo Transfers & Tours is the only one of the three to put a drive time against its private fare (1.5 h).
• A departure timetable from Tamarindo Transfers & Tours. It publishes a shared fare and a drive time with no scheduled times; Tropical Tours Shuttles and Easy Ride are the two operators here that publish a fare and a timetable.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we read Tropical Tours Shuttles’ own Liberia–Tamarindo route page, which is the source for the USD 30 shared fare, the 09:15 and 11:15 times, the 2-hour estimate, the grace window, the USD 100 private fare, the above-six surcharge and the night surcharge; LIR Shuttle’s own Liberia-airport-to-Tamarindo page, the source for the from-USD 89 private fare, the drive time and distance, the holiday-traffic warning, the single-access-road note, and its characterisations of the bus, the shared-shuttle market and rental-car pricing; and Tamarindo Transfers & Tours’ own Liberia-airport transfers page, the source for its USD 30 shared fare, its USD 85 private fare, the 1.5-hour drive time and the same-price-both-directions statement. Taxi rates come from ARESEP’s own published tariff pages, with the resolution and Gaceta references it prints. The authorised-transport guidance comes from Guanacaste Airport’s official site. One later check sits outside that day: the Tropical Tours Shuttles figures were re-read in that page’s raw HTML on 27 August 2026 and were unchanged.

We did not run a live booking on either shuttle system; these are the operators’ own published prices. Where a shuttle company is the only source for a competing mode’s price, we say so in the same sentence as the number.

Last verified: 26 August 2026 — except the Tropical Tours Shuttles figures, re-read on 27 August 2026. Shuttle fares change without notice; ARESEP tariffs change by resolution.
