La Fortuna to Monteverde by Jeep-Boat-Jeep: Fares and Departure Times

Verified on 26 August 2026, on four operators’ own published pages plus a lodge’s driving-route document.

The shared jeep-boat-jeep across Lake Arenal is published at USD 33, USD 35 and USD 36 per person for the morning run by three different operators — the USD 33 and USD 36 as “from” prices — and at USD 40 to USD 50 for the afternoon run, where the USD 40 is a “from” price too. Departure times differ by operator: the published morning departures fall between 07:00 and 08:35 and the afternoon ones between 13:00 and 14:35. The operators put the door-to-door total at 3.5 to 4 hours. A private transfer over the same route is quoted from USD 400 plus VAT — on a unit the operator does not publish consistently, which is why no per-head comparison against it appears on this page.

Three companies sell what is described as the same crossing at three different prices and two different crossing times. The spread is the operators’, not the route’s — and it means the figure that applies to you is the one published by the company you actually booked. What you pay at each end of it is a separate question: we priced the published rates for where to stay in La Fortuna and where to stay in Monteverde on their own pages.

What each operator publishes

All figures checked 26 August 2026 on each operator’s own page. The USD 33, USD 36 and USD 40 fares are published as “from” prices; Jeep-Boat-Jeep La Fortuna notes its fare may vary by pickup point.

Departure and arrival times

Jeep-Boat-Jeep La Fortuna states its departures as 08:00 and 14:00.

MonteTours publishes a fuller pattern, and a seasonal one:

• Twice daily in high season, December to April. Once daily, May to November.
• The morning run departs between 07:00 and 08:35 and reaches Monteverde at approximately 11:00.
• The afternoon run departs between 13:00 and 14:35 — high season only — and reaches Monteverde at approximately 18:00.

Desafío’s private service publishes a timeline rather than a schedule: it departs downtown La Fortuna at 08:20, reaches the Arenal earthen dam at 09:30, and begins the final leg to Monteverde at 10:45.

How long it takes, and how long the boat is — the operators disagree

Use the figure published by the operator you booked. We cannot reconcile these and are not going to pick one.

Two operators say the crossing is about 30 minutes and one says about 45. It may reflect different boats or different docks; none of them says. The two figures are at least internally consistent within each company: the operator quoting the 45-minute crossing is the same one quoting the 4-hour total.

MonteTours breaks its 4 hours down as approximately 1.5 hours of shuttle, approximately 45 minutes of boat, and approximately 1.5 hours of shuttle. Arenal.net breaks its version down as 15 to 30 minutes by road to the Arenal dam dock, 30 minutes across, then 1.5 hours by minibus from the Río Chiquito dock to Monteverde, in a covered 22-passenger vessel.

The rules that change what you pay

Both are published by MonteTours, and we did not find equivalents on the other operators’ pages, so do not assume they apply to a company you booked elsewhere:

• Minimum four passengers. The service needs a quota of four to run. Below that, the shortfall is paid in cash to the driver at pickup.
• Luggage. The standard fare includes one piece of luggage plus a carry-on. An additional bag, a bicycle or a surfboard is USD 10 each, cash to the driver.

Driving it instead

If you have a rental car, the road route is 106.5 km — La Fortuna, Nuevo Arenal, Tilarán, Quebrada Grande, Santa Elena — and takes 3 to 4 hours, according to the driving instructions Monteverde Lodge & Gardens publishes. Arenal.net independently gives the distance as 66 miles (106 km).

Two details from that same document decide whether this is a good idea in your vehicle:

• The sections between Tilarán and Santa Elena are narrow, winding and gravel, and the document says the route is best done in a 4x4.
• The last fuel is at Tilarán, 42.5 km after La Fortuna.

The reason a 106 km drive takes three to four hours is vertical as much as horizontal: La Fortuna sits at approximately 350 m (1,148 ft) and Monteverde at approximately 1,500 m (4,921 ft) — both figures Arenal.net’s. The roughly 1,150 m of climb between them is our subtraction of that operator’s own two numbers, not a figure Arenal.net prints; its own wording is a climb of over 900 metres. Either way, the route’s straight-line distance is far shorter than its road distance, and the difference is vertical.

Shared against private — why we are not giving you a break-even

Dividing Desafío’s from USD 400 plus VAT by a shared fare would produce a group size at which the private transfer becomes the cheaper option per head. We are not publishing that number, for three reasons that are all in the sources.

Desafío does not publish a consistent unit for the USD 400. Its transportation index page carries the figure as “from $400 + VAT” with no unit attached; its own product page for the same private taxi-boat-taxi prints “From $ 400,00 per person” — on a private-vehicle product, sold as a whole vehicle, with a leg-by-leg timeline for one party. Both are Desafío’s own pages, read the same day. We are printing the published unit rather than choosing between them: the operator says per person in the one place it says anything, and the product it is attached to is a private transfer. Read literally, a party of four would owe USD 1,600 plus VAT for one van. We do not believe that is what Desafío charges, and we are not going to assert the reading we find more plausible as though the page said it.

The other two reasons compound it: the USD 400 is a “from” price with VAT stated but not quantified, and operators publish no passenger capacity for the private vehicle, so a per-head figure has no denominator either. A break-even computed over a disputed unit and an unknown capacity would be arithmetic dressed as a fact.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the operators’ own published information, not ours:

• Who actually operates the boat. The shuttle legs appear to be resold under several brands, and no operator page we checked names the boat concessionaire.
• Child or infant fares for the shared service. The operator pages we checked list no reduced child rate.
• A luggage weight limit. Operators state a piece count only, never kilograms.
• The private vehicle’s passenger capacity, and what the VAT on the USD 400 private fare amounts to.
• A consistent unit for that USD 400. One Desafío page attaches no unit to it and another attaches “per person” to the same private product. The operator does not reconcile them, and neither do we.
• Arenal.net’s afternoon fare, and whether the seasonal once-daily pattern MonteTours publishes applies to the other operators.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we read the published fare, schedule and FAQ pages of four operators — Jeep-Boat-Jeep La Fortuna, MonteTours, Arenal.net and Desafío Adventure Company — and the driving-instructions document Monteverde Lodge & Gardens publishes for the road route. Every fare, departure time, journey duration, luggage rule and minimum-passenger rule above is attributed to the operator that publishes it, by name, because they do not agree with each other. We did not run a live booking on any of these systems; these are the operators’ own published prices, which are marked “from” where the operator marks them so.
