Costa Rica 10-Day Itinerary: Every Transport Leg, Priced and Timed

Verified on 26 August 2026, against six operators’ own route pages, schedules and booking products: Tropical Tours Shuttles, Easy Ride Costa Rica, Desafío Adventure Company, Monteverde Tours, Interbus and Sansa.

The four-leg loop published by these operators — San José airport, La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, back to San José — costs between USD 221.55 and USD 238.20 per adult in shared shuttles, taking the cheapest and the dearest published fare on each of the four legs. That is our arithmetic on the operators’ own figures, set out in full below.

What the published data actually shows is a network where the money barely varies and the timetable is the binding constraint — on two of the four legs. One of the four legs, Monteverde to Manuel Antonio, is a single morning departure on every operator that publishes it. On a second, La Fortuna to Monteverde, one operator is single-departure: Interbus’s land-only 08:00, with an empty afternoon column. The other two legs carry at least two published departures on every operator. And one leg carries a passenger minimum — both minimums found sit on the La Fortuna–Monteverde taxi-boat-taxi. Whether that shared-shuttle spend beats a rental car, and at what party size, is priced on our rental car versus shuttle page.

The four legs, priced

Add the cheapest figure on each leg — 54 + 39.55 + 69 + 59 — and the loop is USD 221.55. Add the dearest — 65 + 45.20 + 69 + 59 — and it is USD 238.20. A spread of USD 16.65 across all four legs.

One caveat on that comparison, because it is the trap on this page. Monteverde Tours quotes ex-tax and adds 13%; Desafío and Easy Ride display a flat 45 with no tax line shown at all. After tax the morning services are USD 39.55 against USD 45, and the afternoon services USD 45.20 against USD 45 — effectively the same money — but the two are not strictly like-for-like, because one operator has told you what tax it charges and the others have not.

Monteverde Tours is also the only operator found that charges more for the afternoon boat than the morning one, and its published prices carry an explicit expiry: “Prices valid until 30-November-2026.”

The legs where the timetable, not the fare, decides

We print each operator’s own figure rather than picking one. Use the number belonging to the operator you booked.

Tropical Tours’ arrival times do not match its own stated durations

The operator publishes a departure time, an arrival time and a trip-estimate duration for each route. On six of its ten published departure–arrival pairs, the clock times imply a longer journey than the duration printed in the same block; on one they imply an hour shorter. This is arithmetic on the operator’s own figures:

Three of the ten pairs close, marked ✓ above: Liberia–Tamarindo, the 07:45 La Fortuna–San José and the 08:00 Monteverde–San José. Liberia–Tamarindo is the only route on which every published pair closes — the other two each have a second departure that does not. The page also warns, of its own shared service, “This service is sometimes operated by third party companies.”

The Guanacaste variant

Substituting Tamarindo for Monteverde and Manuel Antonio:

• SJO → La Fortuna: USD 54 (Tropical Tours) or USD 65 (Easy Ride).
• La Fortuna → Tamarindo: USD 70 (Tropical Tours, 08:00, arriving 13:30, ferry fees included) or USD 69 (Easy Ride, 08:00, about 5 hours). Two independent operators agree on both the 08:00 departure and the five-hour duration; Interbus’s table also shows 08:00 and 5:00 hrs.
• Two legs, USD 123 to USD 135 per adult.
• Arriving at Liberia instead: LIR → Tamarindo is USD 30 to USD 39 and 1.5 to 2 hours — the cheapest and shortest transfer anywhere in this loop, and Easy Ride spreads three departures across the day (09:30, 12:30, 15:30) against Tropical Tours’ single 09:15. It is not the only leg with an afternoon option: Easy Ride also publishes 14:00 to La Fortuna and 14:00 to Monteverde, and 12:00 and 16:45 out of Manuel Antonio; Tropical Tours publishes 15:00 to La Fortuna and 13:00 out of Monteverde.

Operators in this set publish no Tamarindo-to-San-José fare. Interbus lists Tamarindo → Fortuna times only.

Private vehicles, where they are published

Tropical Tours publishes two surcharges on top: USD 20 per person after six people, and USD 20 for pickups between 21:00 and 06:00. It requires 24 hours’ notice.

The Desafío private figure carries a unit problem. Its page reads “From $ 400,00 per person” on a private-vehicle product, and “per person” is the same template string the site prints on its shared products. We quote the figure and flag that its unit is not reliably published. For scale on Desafío’s own shared fare of USD 45, USD 400 is 8.9 shared seats — but the page does not publish the private vehicle’s capacity, so whether nine people fit cannot be answered from it.

The private taxi-boat-taxi is the only product in this set that publishes a leg-by-leg timeline: 08:20 depart downtown La Fortuna, 09:30 arrive the Arenal earthen dam and board, 10:45 start the final road leg, 12:00 approximate arrival at the Monteverde hotel — about 3 hours 40 minutes door to door. The same page warns the lake landing has “no permanent docking area because the Arenal Lake is a manmade reservoir” and that the path “can be muddy or slippery”.

Flying the legs instead

Sansa publishes flight times and frequencies for every airport on this loop on its destination pages, and no fares on those pages — but its booking engine’s own fare feed does return them, and we quoted it:

Sansa’s approximately 30 minutes to Quepos sits against the 3.5 to 4.5 hours the shuttle operators publish for the same city pair — and the trade can be priced, from Sansa’s own quote: USD 89.50 one way in its cheapest “Light” fare for 15 October 2026, against USD 62 on Interbus’s shared shuttle for the same city pair. The public bus, and why these figures carry a warning

Three routes were checked on a bus-schedule aggregator. All of these are secondary sources — the operating companies publish nothing usable online — and the portal disclaims its own data: “Los horarios y rutas mostrados son referenciales y pueden variar.”

Two departures a day to Monteverde is the operational fact that matters in a ten-day plan.

Two conflicts on this source, printed unresolved. The San José–La Fortuna fare shows as ₡3,930 here against ₡3,625 recorded from a different aggregator elsewhere in this project — about 8% apart, neither primary. And the portal’s own dollar conversions are unusable: it renders ₡3,910 as about USD 8.54 and ₡3,930 as about USD 6.24 — a larger colón fare shown as a smaller dollar figure, on the same site, on the same day. Only the colón amounts are quoted here.

Monteverde Tours describes the same journey from the other end: “The public bus can take almost 8 hours due to a layover in Tilarán.”

One naming correction from an operator

Monteverde Tours corrects the popular name for the Lake Arenal crossing: “The service is sometimes called the Jeep Boat Jeep, but the name is misleading since the actual land transportation is generally by minivan (also called a microbus).” The same page puts the road alternative at “almost 4.5 hours of solid driving” around the lake via Tilarán and Nuevo Arenal.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the operators’ own published information:

• Interbus per-leg fares on the pages a reader lands on. Its route table carries only departure time and travel time, and its La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio destination pages carry no dollar figure at all. The only dollar figures on those marketing pages are multi-stop circuit packages, from USD 140 per person plus tax for San José → La Fortuna → Manuel Antonio → San José, and USD 185 plus tax for the longer Caribbean circuit. Interbus does publish per-leg fares elsewhere, and this page should not be read as saying otherwise: its booking engine quotes them route by route, and shared adult fares of USD 51 to USD 71 and private per-vehicle fares of USD 161 to USD 341 were read from it for a 15 October 2026 travel date across eleven route pairs — those are set out on our Costa Rica trip cost page. The tables above quote no Interbus fare; every fare there belongs to the operator named beside it.
• Sansa fares on the destination pages a reader lands on. Those pages state flight times and frequencies and no prices. ⚠ An earlier version of this bullet said the booking engine exposes no readable fare feed. That was wrong, and this cohort refutes it: the engine’s own flightList.php feed returned live fares on the same day, which is where the USD 89.50 above and the full flight table on our trip-cost page come from. The gap is on the marketing pages only.
• Gray Line Costa Rica. The company’s web presence is gone: graylinecostarica.com redirects off-domain to a chain ending at an unrelated Australian site. A Gray Line Costa Rica schedule or fare cannot be sourced, and the domain is not linked here.
• Desafío’s plain land transfers, and its Monteverde–Manuel Antonio and La Fortuna–SJO private transfers. Its product sitemap still lists those slugs but every one of those URLs returns 404. Only the three taxi-boat-taxi products are live and priced.
• Monteverde Tours prices for anything except the taxi-boat-taxi. Its shuttle page gives bands only — “most routes are about $50pp - $70pp” — so only its times are cited here.
• Caribe Shuttle fares. Route headings render, but the fares are injected client-side and are absent from the served HTML.
• An official source for public bus fares. The operating company on the Quepos route has no reachable website, so all three bus fares rest on an aggregator.
• Any water route between Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. Operators we fetched publish none; that leg is road-only. The only boat crossing anywhere in this loop is Lake Arenal.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we read the operators’ own route pages, schedule tables and booking products directly. Fares, departure times and stated durations for Tropical Tours Shuttles and Easy Ride come from those companies’ per-route pages. The taxi-boat-taxi prices, schedules and passenger minimums come from Desafío’s own booking pages and Monteverde Tours’ own booking table. Every Interbus departure time and travel time quoted here is an exact row from Interbus’s published route table or its own destination pages; Interbus publishes no fare on those pages, so none is quoted. Sansa flight times and frequencies come from that carrier’s own destination pages.

Interbus’s public availability endpoint was queried read-only on 26 August 2026, for a travel date of 15 September 2026, and returned no results for every hotel pair tried, including routes that do appear on its published table. That was a limit of those query parameters, not of the endpoint: the same endpoint, queried with numeric pickup and drop-off IDs for a travel date of 15 October 2026, returned live shared and private fares for eleven route pairs — the fares described in the section above. The tables on this page rest on neither set of queries.

The four-leg totals, the Guanacaste two-leg totals and the Tropical Tours departure-to-arrival column are our own arithmetic on the operators’ published figures. Where operators disagree we print each one’s number and name the operator; we do not average and we do not pick.

Last verified: 26 August 2026. Fares and timetables change without notice, and one operator’s prices carry a stated expiry of 30 November 2026.
